As the mom of a 21 year old, I know first hand how we can never have enough time with our kids. It seemed like before I knew it, she was off to college and now planning her wedding. In her teen years, I often found it tough to find ways to connect with her. As a skin aesthetician, I have seen that moms and daughters can bond over skin care. Yes, planning a day for a facial and pampering can be a great way to connect with your teen.
Beyond bonding, it's a great way to help them develop good skin care habits for their future. "Not only will you help them deal with acne, decrease their wrinkles, brown spots and large pores when they are adults, but you will also decrease the amount of skin cancer your child will have when they are older," says Prospect, KY, dermatologist Tami Cassis, MD.
According to WebMD, teen acne is nearly unavoidable with more than 85% of teens experiencing it. It can also be hereditary. So if you or dad experienced acne as a teen, it's likely they will too.
So let's solve this together! Bringing your daughter (or a son) in for a facial with me will allow the chance for us to select the right treatment plan and products to help them avoid and eliminate teen acne. During the facial I can talk with them about their skin care habits (don't pick or pop your pimples! don't touch your face!), offer advice and tips according to their skin type, and answer any questions they have about their teen skin.
It's possible that you've tried to help your teen with his or her skin care habits, offering your own suggestions and advice. But as we know, teens know everything and advice from parents can be answered with arguments and slammed doors. Allowing your teen to have these conversations with me can give them helpful advice from someone other than mom and dad. They might actually listen to me, the expert!
Another advantage of a teen facial is it provides that first opportunity for an eyebrow wax. Your teen might be nervous about this, but I can put her at ease and groom her brows gently and minimally to add to her beauty and boost her confidence.
Whether it's a full day at the spa with multiple treatments, or a facial with a skin aesthetician (like me!), you're bound to enjoy the time together. Add in lunch and some shopping for extra special time together.
